I am very excited to be both attending and speaking at Pittsburgh PodCamp 4! What is PodCamp 4, well it's "a FREE community UnConference run by and for people who create, enjoy, or are interested in learning more about social media." PodCamp Pittsburgh 4 is happening on October 10 and 11, 2009 at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh from 9 am to 4 pm! Register here for FREE! Get more information here.

There are some great speakers this year! I am so honored to be presenting myself! I will be speaking on Saturday, October 10th at 3:00 p.m. about "Old vs. New Media."

As a journalist, I have been educated in "old media" techniques and tactics. But why does it have to be old vs. new media? Why can't it be OLD AND NEW Media?

If you can attend, please do so! I think it will be a great event!

Facebook Fan Check not a virus, but beware

Category:

The Facebook application "Fan Check" is not a virus, Facebook tells social media website Mashable.

Rumors have been circulating online that the application, which tells you who your top Facebook friends are based on how much they engage with your profile, spreads malware via Facebook.

Facebook confirmed that the application itself is not a virus, though it is rather buggy. Facebook has disabled some of Fan Check's functions because of this.

The problem with the Fan Check application is that misinformation is being spread through Facebook status updates, more than likely originating with the creators of the virus. Facebook users are using their status update to state that Fan Check is a virus and asking others to copy their status. The update more than likely says that the Fan Check "virus" takes 48 hours to kick in and to inform all your friends to delete it ASAP. This is leading people to search Google, where links to malware exist from sites that promise to "fix" the Fan Check virus. Many of these link install an actual virus onto the user's computer.

My advice, avoid searching for Facebook Fan Check and do not download a "fix" for the non-existent virus. Remove your status if it says that Facebook Fan Check is a virus so that your friends avoid clicking malicious malware links. Also, remove Facebook Fan Check or avoid installing it. There is no reason to install an application that Facebook believes to be buggy and already had issues with.

What is #FollowFriday?

Category: , ,

If you are new to Twitter, chances are you are probably not too sure who would be a good person to follow. Or maybe you just want to find some more good people to follow but you don't know where? Well, #FollowFriday can help you with that. The point of #FollowFriday is to let people know about other interesting people to follow on Twitter. Every Friday, you include the Twitter name of the person you think is great to follow along with the #FollowFriday hashtag.

For example:In those two tweets, I suggested some great people for you to follow. You can choose to suggest 1 person, or 100 people- it doesn't matter.

#FollowFriday was started in January by Micah Baldwin, known on Twitter as @micah, with this simple Tweet:
Since his tweet and help from some re-tweeting friends, the #FollowFriday hashtag has been huge. It is the number one trending topic every Friday and has become a weekly international event on Twitter. It is really simple, so give it a try. Suggest people to follow and check out who your friends are following.

Also, make sure to check your @'s to see who suggested you!
