I cannot even explain how obsessed I am with the Amazon Kindle.
Developed by Amazon, the Kindle sets out to change the way we read books, newspapers, blogs, etc. The Kindle is basically an electronic book-make that 1,500 books. Yes, the Kindle has the ability to hold over 1,500 books- allowing you to choose from over 300,000 titles plus certain newspapers, magazines, and blogs. It has wireless capabilities, allowing you to download books anytime, anywhere- and in less than 60 seconds. The best part is there is no monthly fees, service plans, or hunting for Wi-Fi spots. Check out these pictures from the Amazon Kindle website:
I am going to be honest, I don't even own a Kindle (yet). But from what I have seen and read, I want one. A downfall is that it is a little pricey for me: the 6 inch Kindle costs $299 and the 9.7 inch Kindle costs $489- this is why it's on my Christmas list! However, if you are a big reader it can save you money over time. Most New York Times Bestsellers are $9.99 (compared to what, $25 or more for the actual book!)
There are some drawbacks of the Kindle. It is a device designed specifically for reading text-and that's it. Unlike the iPhone and iPod Touch, it lacks color. It's web browser is extremely simplistic. The screen is only gray. You can't play videos, music, or games. But once again, this isn't what the Kindle was designed to do.
The Kindle has a lot of pros. It contains a huge library at very good prices. It is wireless, so you can get your books anywhere and everywhere! All the books you purchase are backed-up online. Though the Web access is limited, it is also free. Even though it is in gray-scale, so are most books and newspapers. It also has long battery life, allowing you to read for days without having to recharge.
All in all, I would say if you are a big reader and read often, the Kindle is for you. If you are a person who has never walked into your local bookstore or library, it probably won't be worth the cost. I think to reach a wider audience, Amazon needs to bring down the pricing. I really like the Kindle because it does what it was designed to do- allow you to read, but in a much more tech-savvy way!
